Becoming Carbon Neutral

Becoming carbon neutral means taking action to reverse the damage that each of us does to the environment by contributing to carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions. We can do this in partnership together by planting trees to absorb the CO2 we have emitted, or by investing in fuel efficiency measures and renewable energy sources, which help others to emit less CO2.

Wind farm

Trees are made mostly of carbon, and they grow by absorbing CO2 from the air by photosynthesis. So planting new forests and managing them sustainably means we can capture atmospheric carbon and lock it up in wood. Read more here.

Plants release carbon back into the air if they’re cut down and burnt, so another form of carbon mitigation is to support the conservation of existing plant habitat such as forest areas and reduce the amount of wood used as fuel.

A more subtle form of mitigation is to use something else instead of carbon wherever possible. This might take the form of renewable energy (solar, wind, wave etc), or it might mean using sustainably produced timber in place of steel or concrete (which both use huge amounts of carbon in their manufacture). Read more at WWF or Good Energy.

Climate Stewards offers benefits in addition to absorbing your carbon emissions. Our tree-planting encourages biodiversity and helps deprived communities by providing employment or forest crops.
